04 / Put It into Practice

Stake Sizing

How much to place, when to scale up, and why bigger is not always smarter.

7 min readLesson 20 of 30

Stake sizing is deciding how much to place on each bet.

Bigger is not always smarter.

The right stake depends on the offer, the edge, your bankroll, the book, and whether you are trying to protect account life.

Matched betting stake sizing

In matched betting, the stake is usually driven by the offer terms.

If the book says “bet $100, get a $100 free bet”, then the qualifying bet is usually built around that $100 requirement.

The hedge or lay stake is then calculated to balance the outcomes.

Edge Hunters handles that maths for you.

+EV stake sizing

In +EV betting, the stake should be tied to the size of the edge and your bankroll.

A small edge should not get the same stake as a massive edge.

And no edge should mean no bet.

Why not just max everything?

Because max-staking every good offer can make you look very obvious.

It can also make variance harder to handle.

Sometimes the smartest move is not the biggest possible stake.

The key takeaway

Stake sizing is not about ego.

It is about using your bankroll properly, completing offers cleanly, and staying in the game.
